Keeping hydrated out on the trails – Ian Eliot (SWTRF Vice Chairman)

I started my off-tarmac career on a Honda C50 on road tires on our dairy farm aged 10. The mix of road tires and cow pats giving an education in throttle and brake control. I progressed to a KE125 and then a KDX250 which was used for local enduros the Cwmowen and Caio also one season of motocross on a Maico 440 but was never very successful. I left university and started work and took a rest from bikes but had a KTM 250 1989 and then an Armstrong 406 for a couple years which blew up in middle of nowhere in Builth Wells. Anyway, I had kids , had work and mortgage so bikes took a back seat till 2000 when I joined the notorious Caerphilly light car and motorcycle club and bought an XR400 my first real trail riding . Then followed a DRZ and a KTM450exc. I moved to Inverness by which time I had some Maico’s in tow and as no trail riding did some MX . I then ended up in Australia and on arrival bought a Husqvarna TE250 and joined AMTRA (Aussie TRF ) brilliant 3 years and included some riding in Simpson desert. Then 10 years in Switzerland where there was no trail riding so occasional MX track days and instead bought another KTM450 in Spain and trail rode in Murcia during holidays.

I returned to Wales in 2018 and joined the TRF but only got on one ride in a year but in 2019 the group changed a lot and I started riding more and acquired a KTM300 tpi which flatters my skill level. Anyway, started riding more and getting more involved and as I look forward to retirement in 2022, I am helping the chair as vice chair and secretary. Love the way the group is going and how welcoming it is for all ability’s bikes and people.
